Sen. Chambliss’ Health Care Principles

Nov 18 2009

Sen. Chambliss has worked for years to reform America's health care system and make sure Americans have greater access to affordable, quality health insurance. He believes:

• that all pre-existing conditions should be covered.
• that if you switch jobs, you should be able to take your health coverage with you.
• that plans should also focus on preventative care.
• that Americans should be able to control their own insurance plans.

Further, he believes:
• Americans should be able to choose their own health care plans and have options that they can afford. Costs of plans and services provided must be more transparent to allow consumers to comparison shop for the appropriate coverage.
• Health care reform should preserve the doctor-patient relationship, and you should be able to choose the doctor that's right for you.
• Being able to purchase health insurance outside of your state will also add to increased competition and help drive costs down.
• Insurance companies must not be able to turn people down for pre-existing health conditions or cherry pick healthier individuals.
• You should also be able to keep current health plans if you are satisfied with your coverage.
• Americans should also be given tax credits to allow them to shop around for the best health care plan.
• Health care reform should support preventative medicine and wellness to keep Americans healthy.
• Tort reform needs to take place and junk lawsuits against doctors must be ended to ensure wasteful procedures are not continually adding to health care costs.
• Make health care portable from job to job, and allow it to continue if one loses his or her job. Individuals and families - not the companies for which they work - should own their health coverage.

Chambliss is an original cosponsor of S. 1099, "The Patients' Choice Act of 2009," legislation that promotes access to quality, affordable health care without adding billions of dollars in new debt or taxes.
